The Pierce County ARES Peninsula Team in support of county, state and Federal agencies stands ready to provide emergency radio communications for the Gig Harbor region in the event of disaster which damages or destroys communication infrastructure.  Peninsula Team members routinely participate in statewide emergency communication exercises and conduct weekly VHF/UHF radio training nets (voice and digital) in order to be prepared to accomplish their mission. ALL regional amateur radio operators are not only welcome but encouraged to check in to the Peninsula Team's weekly voice net as visitors Mondays at 7:00 PM on the KA7EOC repeater (145.350 MHz, negative offset, PL tone 103.5).  This repeater and the Peninsula Team, operating at Fire District 5 HQ (PMACC), serve as your organized link to emergency services during a comms down disaster so give them a try and be prepared to support your family and community with emergency communications during a calamity.  Check in instructions are provided by the net control operator at the beginning of each radio net.

Our community is strongest when organizations, businesses, faith communities, service providers, emergency responders, schools, and civic groups work together before a disaster occurs. Whether facing earthquakes, severe weather, extended power outages, wildfire smoke, or other emergencies, no single organization can meet all community needs alone. This meeting is an opportunity to: Connect with organizations that serve our community Learn about local preparedness and resilience initiatives Identify resources, capabilities, and potential gaps in service Explore opportunities for collaboration before, during, and after disasters Strengthen relationships that can make a difference when our community faces challenges Communities that invest in preparedness and cross-sector partnerships are better positioned to support residents, protect vulnerable populations, and recover more quickly when disasters occur. By bringing diverse perspectives and resources together, we can build a stronger, safer, and more resilient Gig Harbor region. Your experience, expertise, and commitment to the community make your participation valuable. Whether your organization provides direct services, supports volunteers, operates critical infrastructure, serves vulnerable populations, or simply wants to be part of a more resilient community, we welcome your voice at the table. Together, we can begin building the partnerships and networks that help communities prepare for, respond to, and recover from emergencies more effectively.

From the rhythmic drumming echoing through spring forests to the quiet resilience of winter survival, woodpeckers lead lives that are both familiar and full of surprise. Join award-winning photographer and author Paul Bannick for an immersive online journey through the lives of North American woodpeckers. Based on his new book Woodpecker: A Year in the Life of North American Woodpeckers, this program weaves together stunning photography, current science, and firsthand field stories to explore how these remarkable birds live and adapt across the seasons. Through Paul’s lens, habitats become more than a backdrop—they are dynamic, interconnected systems that shape the lives of these birds. This program offers a deeper appreciation for woodpeckers and the ecosystems they depend on, revealing stories that are often hidden in plain sight. Whether you’re a birder, photographer, or simply curious about the natural world, this evening invites you to see familiar birds in a whole new way. Cost is $15. Comfort Quilters

The Comfort Quilters is a community of women who make beautiful quilts by hand for people who need comfort, whether grieving a loved one, enduring a crisis, or staying at a shelter. Their beautiful quilts are donated to Cancer Care, the Visitation Team, Fostering Hope, WCCW Baby Unit, SOAR, Las Amigas, Habitat for Humanity, Backup Buddies, and others. They give away more than 100 quilts per year.   Participants in this ministry range from novice to highly accomplished quilters. If you have an interest in quilting, a desire to be creative, basic machine sewing skill, and a willingness to learn, the Comfort Quilters want you to invite you to be a part of the group. And if you are a master of the art of quilting, the Quilters want to learn from you.   The Comfort Quilters find real fellowship working together and encouraging one another to use whatever talents God has given us to serve others. In fact, the Comfort Quilters craft friendship as well as quilts. And it's fun!   If you want to gift a quilt or learn to make them, Contact Cara Taylor to connect with the group.    The Comfort Quilters Ministry meets the second and fourth Thursdays of the month in Room 114/114A & 118/118A on the first floor.   Group Events - Adults Location: Gig Harbor 7700 Skansie AveGig Harbor, WA 98335-8309

The Witches Brew is back! When witches go riding, and black cats are seen, the moon laughs and whispers, ’tis near Halloween. Grab your broomsticks and join us for the 4th annual Gig Harbor Witches Brew! Whether you're a budding witch or full blown Sanderson sister, this event is perfect for all skill levels. So, gather your fellow wizards and witches, and let's hit the water. We will meet at the Gig Harbor boat launch at 2 p.m. and launch shortly after. Paddle through the harbor at your own pace and head to the Gig Harbor Lighthouse. Bring your own preferred beverage to toast the coven and enjoy before heading back to the dock. We will grab a group witch picture here! Deadmans Island Kayak and SUP is back and offering rentals for anyone who wants to join but does not have a vessel! $40 for the 3-hour event. Reserve ahead of time by texting Scott at (425) 765-8278 and your rental will be on-site at the boat launch waiting for you. Back again 'fill the caldron'! We have partnered with GHPFish again this year! I am so excited to raise money and gather needed items for those in need in our community. We will be filling the caldron this year in support of GHPFish! Please bring non-perishable items to the boat launch. We will collect all items prior to launching. We will also have a poster on site if you would like to make a donation directly to Fish to support their efforts. If you fancy, bring candy or other Halloween treats to pass to spectators downtown as we pass the public docks. A lot of our witches fly off to Seven Seas for a pint after the lighthouse.Costumes are HIGHLY encouraged. Grab your board and come out with your best witch outfit, broomstick paddles, dry ice caldrons, lights and anything else you can think of. Last year we had 200+ witches floating through the harbor together and descending on the lighthouse. This is a bring/rent your own vessel event.   Disclaimer: This is a non-sanctioned event and by choosing to participate you do so at

In 2024, the Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) successfully eradicated the northern giant hornet from Washington State, which posed a significant threat to honeybees and other native pollinators and insects. However, earlier this year, WSDA intercepted a live yellow-legged hornet in Vancouver, which are highly invasive and known to reduce honeybee hives and honey production. Additionally, the spotted lanternfly, which feeds on a wide range of plants including grapes, hops, stone fruits, and fruit and hardwood trees, is hoping to ruin Conservation & Cocktails (Hops Beware!). From quiet neighborhood edges to remote mountain ridgelines, cougars move through the landscapes we call home—often unseen, but always present. Join Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife Carnivore Research Scientist Brian Kertson for an engaging evening exploring the lives of one of the Pacific Northwest’s most elusive predators. Drawing on more than two decades of field research, Brian will share insights into cougar ecology and behavior, how these animals navigate both wild and human-dominated spaces, and what it means to coexist with a top carnivore in our region. Along the way, you’ll hear stories from the field—moments of close encounters, long hours of tracking, and the challenges and surprises that come with studying Washington’s big cats. Brian will also offer practical guidance for staying safe while recreating outdoors and understanding cougar presence in both rural and suburban environments. Whether you’re a hiker, wildlife enthusiast, or simply curious about the animals that share our region, this evening offers a deeper look into the hidden lives of cougars—and our relationship to them. Cost is $10. Register here: https://ncascades.org/signup/programs/from-backyards-to-mountain-tops-cougars-in-the-pacific-northwest-online/program-registration?

When we pause to sketch a plant, something quiet and transformative happens. We step out of the rush of daily life and enter the patient rhythm of the living world. Botanical sketch journaling is not about creating museum-worthy masterpieces or achieving technical perfection—it is an act of deep observation, curiosity, and connection with nature. By translating what you see onto the page, you begin to notice the subtle architecture of a leaf, the delicate swirl of a seedpod, or the rich, shifting hues of autumn foliage in ways that a camera—or a passing glance—simply cannot capture. Led by a professional botanical illustrator at the University of Washington Herbarium in the Burke Museum, this engaging 2.5-hour online workshop bridges the gap between scientific observation and artistic expression. Designed for all experience levels—from complete beginners to seasoned nature lovers—you’ll learn how to observe plants with an illustrator’s eye, recognizing key morphological characteristics and diagnostic features while building a rewarding and approachable sketch journaling practice. Through live demonstrations featuring Pacific Northwest fall foliage and dried seedpods, you’ll learn techniques for sketching with confidence, capturing fine textures through clean linework, and using watercolor strategically to highlight important plant features. You’ll also discover how to pair drawings with descriptive notes to create elegant, informative journal pages. Whether your goal is to begin a nature journaling practice or deepen your understanding of plant biology through art, you’ll leave with practical skills—and a fresh way of seeing the botanical world around you. Open to all levels. No prior drawing or scientific experience is required—just curiosity and a love of the natural world. If you can't make the specific date or time of a class you want to take, you can still register and we will send you a link to view the program on your own time! All registrants will have

We gather to celebrate. We also gather to look out for one another.

Drink spiking, knowing the signs of manipulation, image-based abuse, coercive partners, isolation tactics — these don't only happen "somewhere else." They happen at the bars, parties, and shows we love most. THE WALL is built on the premise that the people who show up to enjoy live music also need to know what to watch for, where to go if something happens, and how to look out for the person next to them.

Drink Spiking is Surging

Conservatively, 1 in 10 women have had a drink spiked — and the real number sits above it, since most victims never find out. GHB clears the body in ~12 hours — know the signs, act fast.

Know the Signs

Gaslighting · DARVO · love bombing · isolation — manipulation patterns to spot before they escalate. For yourself, and the person next to you.

Image-Based Abuse

Non-consensual photos, deepfakes, and "revenge" sharing are crimes in WA. Know your rights and the steps to take if you're targeted.
