This is a wonderful program our city sponsors that takes advantage of empty store fronts and fills them with art space for 3-6 month durations. Artists get important work space and public exposure, landlords get exposure to their buildings and potential tenants, and our city gets the kind of unique variety spontaneous arts culture naturally brings.

November is Tacoma’s Arts Month, and in order “to illustrate the collective talent in our city and get people involved in the arts,” Art at Work was born. You’ll find their annual brochure to November exhibits in almost every independent, community-involved store or coffee shop around. With all kinds of art ranging from a broad array of music to dance, you’ll enjoy theatre, visual arts, literary readings, lectures, workshops, film screenings, cultural events and more. Tacoma's 100th Monkey

Scientists studying monkey behavior on an island trained each newborn to wash sand off buried yams before they ate them.
They wondered when the parents would learn from the babies to wash the yams - but it wasn’t happening.
The scientists kept training each newborn and it took teaching 100 babies before the parents caught on and began washing their yams too.
This is called critical mass: The scales tipped and suddenly all monkeys were washing yams before they ate them, including monkeys on nearby islands.
The 100th monkey can be an ordinary person--not the most outstanding one in the community. The idea is that once an idea gains the acceptance and is practiced consciously by at least 100 people, it seems to take on a life of its own and become disseminated broadly as if by quantum leaps.
Tacoma 100th Monkey was the monkey genius of Lynn DiNino and as expected our 100th Monkey Events have gained total acceptance of the art community in Tacoma. Attendance is now exceeding 300 at times. What do you do at a 100th Monkey event? Hopefully you show up - on the night we post, at the location we post, with monkey finger food, wine and several of your friends.
